For a long time, I believed that spring cleaning was primarily about making the house "clean."
Then one day, I realized that wasn't really it.
What we're looking for in spring isn't just a gleaming house.
It's a house where we breathe easier.
Our home often becomes a reflection of our mental load
When life moves fast, everything slowly accumulates.
Objects.
Papers.
Small messes we put off until tomorrow.
Surfaces we no longer have time to maintain as before.
And without us even realizing it, our environment eventually becomes heavy too.
I've experienced it.
There were times when I would enter my home... without truly feeling rested.
As if my brain kept racing despite the silence.
Yet, our home is supposed to be our recharging place
It's our battery.
The place we return to after a long day.
The place where we recover.
Where we lay down the weight of everything else.
We often talk about self-care.
But we sometimes forget that the space we live in greatly influences our energy.
A cluttered home is tiring.
A neglected home creates mental noise.
A home that lacks maintenance constantly gives us the impression that there's "something left to do."
Conversely, a well-maintained home helps us slow down. Not because it's perfect. But because it soothes us.
Spring always arrives like a big breath of fresh air
The light changes. Windows open. The air circulates again.
And every year, I feel like spring quietly gives us permission to start over. Not to become someone else. Just to start anew, lighter. To make it cute again, reflecting oneself!
Starting over doesn't mean replacing everything
I think we've forgotten that a bit. We're constantly shown that we need to buy new things to feel a change. But honestly, some of the greatest sensations of renewal I've experienced simply came from:
- decluttering a room;
- cleaning a forgotten surface;
- letting in the light;
- organizing my environment.
As if the house was finally starting to breathe again. And me too.
Spring cleaning then becomes something else
It's no longer a chore.
It's a way to reclaim one's space.
To slow down. To take care of what welcomes us every day.
Because deep down, our home should be the place that recharges us...
not the place that drains us. It's the place that reflects us.
This year, I'm trying to see cleaning differently
Not as an endless list. But as a way to bring a little calm around me.
One drawer at a time. One window at a time. One room at a time. And honestly...
I think that might be what true spring cleaning is about. Finding a space where you feel good.
A simple tip: go to the florist, ask for 3 stems of the "current" flower that speaks to you. Buy only those, 3 stems. No foliage, no paper, nothing else, and add them to your favorite room.
